Lighthouse hotel deal off

Date: 2015, 19 September

By Samantha Kett

PLANS to turn Jávea's iconic lighthouse into a hotel have been abruptly shelved thanks to an about-turn by the central government.
Public pressure is thought to be behind the ministry of public works' sudden change of heart - a petition on campaign site change.org netted 14,000 signatures in a matter of days, and a massive protest march with drums, whistles and banners saw over 500 local residents turn out at the weekend.
They walked from the La Plana area on the Montgó as far as the lighthouse above the Cabo de San Antonio with placards reading, 'don't turn out the light' (no pare la luz del faro) and 'the lighthouse is ours from the ground to the roof' (El far és nostre de terra al sostre)
