Formula One Champion Michael Schumacher is no longer in a medically induced coma. According to a statement released by his manager Sabine Kehm on behalf of his family, the 45-year-old F1 champ has been released from the rehabilitation ward in the Grenoble University Hospital, in order to continue his long phase of rehabilitation.

Schumacher, who’s been widely regarded as one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time, suffered a severe brain trauma in a skiing accident on 29 December last year, in the exclusive French ski resort of Meribel. In order to reduce swelling of his brain, the doctors kept the seven times world champion in a medically induced coma to lower blood flow and pressure.

Relatives of Schumacher praised the excellent job of the medical staff at the hospital, but have previously warned that recovery will be a long and hard fight for the retired driver.

Although out of danger, the chance of making a full recovery from his life threatening injuries is very unlikely. “Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma any more,” Kehm added: “For the future, we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye.”
